Terry Blade Set to Release Imaginative Album, 'American Descendant of Slavery'

Terry Blade is a Chicago based award-winning LGBTQ-identifying singer-songwriter. His musical style has drawn comparisons to artists like Antony and the Johnsons, Amos Lee, Tracy Chapman, and Meshell Ndegeocello. His new groundbreaking project, American Descendant of Slavery, is a musically interesting outtake on black music, slavery, fused together with the subtle notes of hip hop, folk, and soul.  On the album, Blade incorporates original music with audio recordings of former African-American slaves (and their descendants) obtained from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, he grew up on the unique local funk sounds of go-go music and inherited a vocal baritone richness which he uses to explore an artistic sound that fuses soul and r&b with heavy folk influences.

There are 19 tracks, a number of which have a soulful hip hop vibe as Blade blends the elements of rap and r&b to deliver some profound lyrical content. On "Reparations", he spits over a jazzy beat "Where my 40 acres at? You way past that deadline."

"Mr. Robertson" is a deeply connective track that touches on the effects on a black man when the father is absent from the home. "Not a word, Mr. Robinson... You don't know me" On this track, Terry Blade shows off his skills as a singer songwriter with a heartfelt melody over acoustic guitar and slap beat.

I was also moved by "Black Hurts". It has a neo-soul vibe fits right in with the overall essence of this project.

Overall, this album is well constructed, imaginative, and  musically sound. The creativity and time put into this project is apparent.

American Descendant of Slavery was written, performed, arranged, and executive produced by Terry Blade and Blade Modus Records. Jay Carney of Starburst Records served as co-executive producer, and publisher.  It will be officially released on February 5th, 2021.
