Ab-Salam is not your average emcee. Although he's got that east coast swagger (he's from Philly and lives in Brooklyn, New York), the 30 year old rapper chooses to engage listeners in lyrical content that is out of the box, cutting edge--dare I even say, data driven. Yes, this brother pulls out the STEM subjects on ya. Ab-Salam enjoys rapping about technology and data. If that isn't refreshingly innovative enough for you, I don't know what is. What I do know is that his new single, D.R.E.A.M. (Data Rap), is a lyrically cerebral, mellow, rap track that entertainingly engages the world wide web in urban wordplay.
"Cookies on browser, breadcrumbs on the web. Tracking that data ahead of the feds."
While the content and the approach read as alt-rap, experimental, and the beat feels a bit chill hop-ish, Ab-Salam's flow is classically structured, staying close to the fundamentals of boom-bap. His delivery feels like that of a conscious rap performance, carefully guarded with subdued precision. D.R.E.A.M. shows off what can emerge when you tinkle with a truly unique expo of hip hop's growing bank of elements.
