Rapper/ songwriter, Topshotta Fi grew up in the Whitfield Chapel Rd neighborhood of Prince Georges County, Maryland. The artist is part of the record label, Khalaezzy Game Records alongside his childhood friend and frequent collaborator Chuku 100. His most recent release is a mad chill project entitled "New Meta". The13 track rap album has a bop that feels like trap meets backpack melodic rap. The release of the album spawned off some hot singles including 1028, Breaking the Curse, Bullzeye ft. Chuku100, and Don't Come Cheap.
Don't Come Cheap is one of the best songs on the album. His melodic vocal sound pulls you in and the rap ballad's lyrics shows off Fi's skills as a songwriter. He sings, "move on if you rather do better things, cuz I can't give you control of my everything." Take a look at the video he dropped for the track earlier this month...
Listen to Topshotta Fi's latest album, "New Meta".
1028 has a nice vibe. And lyrically, he uses his skills as a songwriter to artfully point out some important observations. I really enjoyed the snippets where shared little nuggets of wisdom he seemed to discover with mental clarity. On the song, Topshotta Fi spits, "I can't go down the same road that they paved. Start to do better, they say that you changed." The visual dropped which dropped on 10/28 seems to a play on the video's high quality and its release date. You can check out the video below...
Another track of note is Ra Ra. It's a sexy, progressive mix of R&B, melodic trap, and emo rap elements. Fi turns the romance into overdrive as he sings, "come into my room, girl I take you down."
The DMV rapper has been on the grind for a minute, releasing his first single (F.S.B. ft. Lightshow) back in 2013. Fi released his debut solo project, "Happy Belated" in 2016 and got some heavy play off the lead single, For the Low. To date, Topshotta Fi has released a total of 5 projects including "BLessons" (2017), the freestyle-filled mixtape, "BullzeyeFi" (2017), "Eyez On The Prize" (2019), and most recently, "New Meta" (2021). All projects were released independently under the newly founded Khalaezzy Game Records, which was officially up and running by July of 2018.
"Got too much money. Now it ain't the same. I'm blowing this money. I should feel ashamed."
Fi has a sound that is almost completely different than most in his hometown area. His style has been described by many fans and blogs as “a mixture of bars and making an actual song”. Songs like “Overdrive” “Back outside “ and “Element” are great examples of the Mc’s ability to effortlessly float over a track with intense bars , a self reflective sense of vulnerability and clever wordplay all while still being able to create catchy (and at times very dark) melodies and unique flows.
Once you start listening to "New Meta", you'll feel the vibe I'm talking about. Topshotta Fi is a rapper's rapper; it just hits different. His musical influences are an eclectic mix of new and old cultural greats like Lil Wayne, 2Pac, Future, Kanye West, Vybz Kartel. And as he continues building his fanbase and catalog, I have no doubt that he will ascend up the hip hop ladder.
