Mixtape Review: Roc Solo Drops Unplugged and Unfiltered New Rap Project, 'The Commitment Tape'

I grew up in the studio. My mother was a background singer for a rap soul group called the Soul Boys, and I can remember many nights falling asleep right outside the both. So, I know the concept of an all night studio session, but rapper Roc Solo's new mixtape goes a step further. Entitled,  “The Commitment Tape”, Solo recorded the whole project in one session... Now, that's commitment!

"Oh you got a gun, so you a rapper, huh. Oh you sell a lil weed, so you a trapper, huh."

The mixtape is dope with its nostalgic, classic rap sound. Roc Solo takes you for a quick dip into an era of rap music that everyone loved. He pays homage to his favorite rapper, Lil Wayne’s mixtape series “Dedication” as he presents “The Commitment Tape”. To get the project jumping, Roc teamed up with Wayne’s Room Studios and Green Diamond Productions to create this project in one studio session, and he produced a Vlog for fans and listeners to get an inside look at his creative process.

The intro, has a driving energy. He takes his time with his flow, and it feels like he's delivering a battle rap or a diss track. He spits, "I like to talk sh*t when I walk sh*t. A lotta this and that. But we gon' hawk sh*t..."

Roc Solo, who is from Norfolk Virginia, and developed an ear for music at an early age.  He's a rising artist who's got a true appreciation for heavy hitting sounds and beats. On the mixtape, you'll hear some familiar hip hop syncopation--rapping over popular beats like Kodak Black’s Super Gremlin and Rick Ross’s Outlawz.

Roc Solo definitely delivers some raw raps. Another standout is Super Solo which uses Kodak's beat and switches up his flow structure showing his versatility as an artist. It's a dope track.

Along with the studio Vlog and Mixtape itself, Roc Solo has also released music video, with a spectacular performance of a song called VALLEY which is the last song on “The Commitment Tape”. I love when he raps, "windows down when I drive, hear the city cry." With this song, Roc Solo truly delivers a live like performance to a remix of Rick Ross “Outlawz” featuring Jazmine Sullivan and 21 Savage. You can check it out below....

"The Commitment Tape" dropped today and is available on Spinrilla, MyMixtapez and other streaming mixtape platforms.
